It still makes me laugh out loud even though I’ve watched it many times.
But it also makes you think about what you’re achieving because of your belief systems, and the importance of challenging them on a regular basis when they’re not enabling us to get the best results. The quote I’ve used from Shawn comes from his 10/5 principle which was used at The Ritz Carlton. It involves just a few simple behavioural rules that all staff are trained to follow. If a guest walks by a Ritz Carlton employee within ten feet, the employee should make eye contact and smile. If that guest walks by within five feet, the employee should say, ‘Hello’.This simple rule has made such a difference in the hotel group and they have seen this become a contagion with their guests. It’s the ripple effect in spreading happiness.
I did this during the pandemic on my walks. To begin with no-one answered when I said hello. By the time we were at the end of the first month, people were starting to smile as they walked towards me. By the end of month two, we were having conversations! Try it in the office or at home and let me know how you get on!
If you haven’t watched Shawn Achor’s TED talk on ‘happiness’, I really recommend that you do. It will set you up for the day 🙂
