Emotions are Information

Emotions are Information

I’d like to share a podcast that I think you’ll find very useful, if not for yourself, then for someone close to you.

I love listening to podcasts, and one that is high on my list is Mel Robbins. She’s so down to earth and interviews many amazing people, from which I come away with a pocket full of new tools and techniques.

While I was out walking, I was listening to an episode with Dr Julie Smith, who provided us with a toolkit to guide us through all of life’s twists and turns. Some of which I wish I’d had to hand over the last year!

I know I’ve talked about emotions before, but a key message that reverberated in my head was, ‘Emotions are information.’ They’re not good or bad; they’re just providing us with something to be less judgmental about and more curious.

I loved the way Dr Julie Smith talked about our thoughts being actors on stage and that you have the choice about where you place the spotlight – where are you putting your time and attention, and which one gets chosen to be in the limelight!

We hear so much about remaining positive, and if we’re experiencing negative thoughts we’re somehow failing. However, emotions are part of the human experience. We don’t want to get rid of them otherwise we’d never be able to show up in an authentic, empathic way.

What we need to do is learn how to regulate our emotions, i.e. take a bird’s eye view and take a perspective on why we’re feeling that way, knowing that we have a choice of how we manage them.

So, if you’d like to hear more about Dr Julie’s toolkit, listen here.
