The power of focusing on your team’s strengths

The power of focusing on your team’s strengths

I’ve been working with a colleague to review the way we manage performance. I’m so pleased we’re looking at a strength-based approach rather than the one I grew up with – the deficit approach. The latter was about identifying and correcting weaknesses with the belief that addressing deficiencies would lead to overall improvement. But all it really did was breed mediocrity.

We still see a ‘deficit’ approach being wheeled out in organisations, and you might ask what’s the problem with that – don’t we need to be aware of our weaknesses?

The problem is we tend to focus on negative aspects due to our negative bias being stronger than our positive bias. We’re more likely to notice negative information, including our own shortcomings. If we focus on what’s gone wrong rather than what’s gone right, we focus the person’s attention on looking for mistakes, which can create a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Shifting to a strengths-based approach requires a change in mindset and practices. It involves recognising and nurturing individual talents, which can lead to more engaged, productive, and satisfied individuals. When you do this, you’ll find several things happen.

✨  It boosts confidence

Concentrating on what you’re good at enhances your self-esteem and confidence. This positive mindset can lead to greater motivation and productivity.

✨  It maximizes the individual’s potential

When we hone in on our strengths, we achieve higher levels of performance by leveraging our talents and abilities to their fullest extent.

✨  Levels of positive energy rise

Focusing on strengths generates positive energy and enthusiasm, which can inspire those around you.

✨  Improves levels of engagement

When we align our work with our strengths, we’re generally more engaged and satisfied, which leads to increased job satisfaction and overall well-being.

✨  It encourages growth

While it’s important to be aware of weaknesses, focusing on strengths can encourage continuous growth and development in areas where you excel.

So, what can you do to enable this approach with your team?

💪🏼  Identify strengths within the team

There are lots of tools out there, or reflect on past successes and feedback received.

💪🏼  Align tasks with strengths

Are there options where you can help your people choose tasks and projects that align with their strengths? There’s always someone in your team who enjoys a task you don’t like doing!

💪🏼  Opportunities for growth

Develop your team’s strengths through training, mentorship, or taking on challenging projects.

💪🏼  Collaborate with others

Working with colleagues who complement your strengths can create a balanced team where everyone contributes their best skills.

💪🏼  Reflect and adapt

When we reflect on our work, we can see how we’re using our strengths. Adapt approaches to ensure you and your team are leveraging your strengths effectively.

A great way to help your colleagues whilst reinforcing your own strengths is to mentor and coach others.
