Letting go of outdated beliefs: Reflection, bias, and how leaders choose differently

Letting go of outdated beliefs: Reflection, bias, and how leaders choose differently

As humans, we form biases that help us navigate the world

If you reflected on what went well last year and what would make it even better, did you become aware of any biases or beliefs that are no longer serving you well?

What I noticed when I looked back at last year…

When I took time to reflect on what went well last year, e.g. the meaningful conversations, the work that felt aligned, the moments where people trusted each other enough to be real, something else surfaced, too.

A few long‑held beliefs and biases were still quietly shaping how I showed up. Not harmful ones. Just outdated. Familiar stories that once helped me navigate complexity, but now keep me from stepping fully into the work I want to do.

A belief that I needed to hold everything for everyone.

A bias towards over‑preparing instead of trusting what I already know.

The story I tell myself that ease must be earned, not allowed.

These patterns don’t serve the spaces I want to create in the future. Spaces rooted in presence, clarity, and energy. Spaces where people feel safe enough to open up, and supported enough to grow.

So, I’m asking myself:

❓ What am I ready to let go of?

❓ What belief has done its job and can now be released?

❓ What new story wants to take its place?

Reflection isn’t only about celebrating what went well. It’s also about noticing what no longer fits… and choosing differently.

As you look back on your own year, are there any beliefs or biases you are ready to let go of?

If you feel comfortable, I’d love you to share one. Your insight might be exactly what someone else needs to hear today.
