S.P.R.O.U.T.S. for managing conflict

This time of the year can be stressful with all the planning, shopping, and social obligations. It can lead to people being more irritable and prone to conflict.

So, I thought I’d share my latest FOOD topic to help manage these situations.

S.P.R.O.U.T.S.!

And whether you love them or hate them, they’re perfect for this time of year.

🥬 Stay calm: Just like sprouts need the right temperature to cook perfectly, staying calm in a conflict helps you handle the situation better. If you get too heated, things can get mushy and unappetizing. Remember your attitudes and behaviours affect the attitude and behaviour of others.

🥬 Positive regard: Sprouts are often loved or hated. Respecting different opinions about sprouts can teach us to value diverse perspectives in a conflict. Everyone’s taste is different, and that’s okay!

🥬 Reframe: If you think sprouts are bitter, try cooking them differently—like roasting with Parmesan. Similarly, in a conflict, try to see the situation from a new angle. This can lead to creative solutions and a sweeter outcome.

🥬 Open communications: Just as a chef uses all senses to perfect a dish, use all your communication skills to understand the other person’s viewpoint. Listen actively and be present, just like you would when tasting a new recipe.

🥬 Use ‘I’ statements: Instead of saying, “Everyone hates sprouts,” say, “I’ve noticed I prefer them roasted.” This approach reduces defensiveness and makes your feedback more personal and constructive.

🥬 Take responsibility: If your sprouts turn out too salty, own it and adjust next time. Similarly, in a conflict, acknowledge your part and be open to improvement. We all make mistakes and can learn from them.

🥬 Saying sorry: If you overcook the sprouts, a sincere apology can make dinner guests more forgiving. In conflicts, a heartfelt “sorry” can go a long way in mending relationships and moving forward.

And there you have it…. I hope you’ll find my S.P.R.O.U.T.S. useful over the coming weeks!
